The El Dorado City Council is expected to hear updates on several projects during a water and public works meeting, which will begin at 10 a.m. today in the Council Chamber of City Hall.

Robert Edmonds, director of public works, is on the agenda to discuss progress on the construction of a new city dog pound and a major drainage improvement/repair project on 10th Street between West and Washington avenues.

The city is relocating its dog pound from the grounds of the City Shop on Martin Luther King Boulevard to a new facility at the intersection of U.S. 82 and South West Avenue/Southfield Road.

LANXESS is leasing the two-acre site to the city for a nominal fee.

Last year, the city council accepted the low bid of $594,341 from Diversified Construction and Design to build the new pound, which is replacing the dilapidated facility on MLK.

Construction got underway late last summer.

Work on the 10th Street project also began last summer and shut down the westernmost portion of the street for several months.

The bulk of the project called for a pour-in culvert that spans several hundred feet.

In other business, Mayor Paul Choate is also expected to brief council members on a recent roof replacement project at City Hall.

Work began in late January to replace the leaky roof.

In response to a property insurance claim filed by the city, the Arkansas Municipal League determined that a total roof replacement was in order at an estimated at $180,000.

The city is kicking in $28,000 from its capital outlay budget for the $10,000 insurance deductible and approximately $18,000 to upgrade a slope on the roof -- work that will allow water to drain off the roof faster, Choate previously explained.
