A softball player’s senior year probably isn’t the best time to switch to a new position in the field. Then again, most seniors would be eager to do whatever it takes for their squad. So for El Dorado’s Delaney Loyd, it wasn’t a hard choice.

Loyd, a standout centerfielder throughout her career, moved to shortstop this season. It was a move Coach Chris Ezell made to help the Lady Wildcats’ defense.

“She played there in some scrimmages last year and she has been willing to step up for the team this year and learn a new position as a senior,” said Ezell.

Loyd has played shortstop in most of El Dorado’s games this season. One of the most difficult spots on the field, she’s had her ups and downs.

“Before this year, I’ve never played shortstop. In practice, I would sometimes get reps there just because but once we realized how short staffed we were, I had to step up and be the person to try that position,” Loyd said.

“I started off rough at the spot but I have quickly adapted to the change. Of course I make some errors but now I look like I have always played the position.”

Loyd, who has signed to play at National Park College in Hot Springs, said the position change has had, overall, a positive impact.

“I feel playing shortstop has helped me be a better defensive player overall. I am more versatile than I was. It is a lot different than the outfield but I am becoming more comfortable and confident there,” she said.

“Being in the infield has definitely made me feel challenged which I enjoy. Sometimes the outfield is easy to me because I have done it for so long. I almost feel like I am more involved because every single pitch I have somewhere that I have to be, whether it be backing up the pitcher or covering the bag. Being able to play shortstop now makes me feel like an overall better athlete.”

Loyd’s senior year, so far, hasn’t been her most productive. She refused to use the position change as an excuse.

“In the batters box, I have had a rough year,” she said. “This change has shaken me up a little bit but I wouldn’t say shortstop is the reason I am not performing how I would like to offensively.”

The Lady Wildcats have made the turn and are in the second round of the 5A South season with a 3-8 record. Loyd looks forward to a strong finish, both for herself and the team.

The senior has proven in her career and especially this season, she will do anything to help her squad. She will take that attitude into her college career.

“In college, I will be playing some infield and some outfield,” she said. “I will do whatever the team needs me to do.”
