Huttig man found not guilty of murder

A jury this week acquitted Huttig man Naikia D. Riley, 48, of murder.

Riley was suspected in the Aug. 6, 2021 shooting death of Terrance D. Williams.

The jury did find Riley guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and he was sentenced to pay a $10,000 fine for the infraction.

According to court documents, Riley turned himself in to authorities after he was identified as a suspect in Williams's shooting. Riley's neighbor, who had been with Williams at the time of the shooting, told police that Williams and Riley had some sort of ongoing disagreement at the time of the incident.

When Riley arrived at his neighbor's house that day, the neighbor said, he had a gun in his hand. The neighbor took cover when Riley arrived, while Williams rushed to his own vehicle, according to court records.

Riley told police Williams had been threatening him and family members for months at the time of the incident. He said have a pistol in his hand when he got out of his vehicle at his neighbor's, and said Williams rushed to his vehicle and was unholstering a gun of his own; at that point, Riley shot him, he told police, records state.

According to court records, Riley also told police he was a convicted felon and said the gun he had was one a family member had left in his vehicle.

He declined to provide details about his and Williams's disagreement to police, records state.
