Planning for the El Dorado Christmas Parade has officially started, and the El Dorado-Union County Chamber of Commerce is encouraging community groups and businesses to start registering.

The theme for this year's parade is "Oh what fun it is to...," following the City of El Dorado's lead. Karen Hicks, vice president of membership and events at the Chamber, said those who register for the parade should fill in the blank in the theme as they make their floats.

"We are asking you to decorate your float showing how you celebrate," Hicks said. "I am really looking forward to seeing the interpretations of that in all the different entries and floats."

This year's parade will not allow walking groups, Hicks said.

"For the safety of our students, we don't do walking groups," Hicks said. "Dance teams and stuff – it's a lot of walking and they kind of lose momentum going up the hill, leaving gaps. We can't have gaps since it will be broadcast live on KTVE."

The KTVE broadcast will air live on channel 10 the night of the parade, and will likely re-air the following Saturday morning, Hicks said. She said she thinks the broadcast will be a good chance for local businesses to spread the word about what they do.

"When you register, we'll ask you for some details about your businesses, your float, your organization, and they'll read that live," Hicks said. "It's a great opportunity for you to get your name out there, because you're going to be on television twice."

Registration for the parade is due no later than 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, Hicks said.

The parade will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, starting at 7 p.m. It's route will begin on North West Avenue from the intersection with 18th Street, head south before turning onto Main Street, loop around the Square and then end at Peach.

"We're looking forward to our Elf Squad. They will announce the parade. Master General Elf Mike Means and his squad of theater kids from the South Arkansas Arts Center and around Union County – the Christmas parade starts with them," Hicks said.

This year's parade will be the 44th annual in the City of El Dorado, and Hicks said the Chamber is already looking ahead to next year's 45th anniversary event.

"The Clydesdales will be here next year," Hicks said.
