It was a long basketball season for Junction City’s girls last year. The Lady Dragons went 6-23 with just one conference victory. Coach Henry Harrell has a 15-player roster, including six seniors and expects this season to be much better.
“We’ll be better than we were last year. We should be able to compete in every game this year,” Harrell said. “The kids have responded very well to the new assistant coach who came in and worked on a lot of fundamentals. We should be better as ball handlers, and we’ll shoot the ball better as well. We’re looking forward to the season.”
Sarah Van Es will work as Harrell’s assistant coach this season.
The Lady Dragons return three starters in seniors Kazarria Gray and Lashaw Shaw and junior Bria Watson. The other seniors include Denenzia Armstrong, De’Nyah Brown, Serenity Brown and Rhianna Frazier. The juniors include Karla Castillo, Yazmin Glosson, Rhianna Henry, Kalisha Shaw, Taylor Stewart and Shacristyia Williams with sophomores Kealey Hunter and Nehema Jones.
The Lady Dragons are scheduled to open the season Thursday at Drew Central.
Harrell said the team could be successful if it can handle a few fundamental situations better.
“Being able to handle the press is going to be a key for us,” he said. “Handling the press and rebounding will be the keys to us winning and we have to shoot free throws better. Those will be the three keys to us having a successful season.”
