Arkansas State Police on Tuesday responded to a serious car accident on Haynesville Highway.

First responders assembled along the highway blocked the roadway near Mt. Willie Road for some time Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred approximated 4.5 miles south of Parkers Chapel High School.

Sheriff Ricky Roberts said the Union County Sheriff's Office assisted with traffic control at the scene, and a News-Times reporter also observed a Parkers Chapel Volunteer Fire Department truck and a ProMed ambulance there.

Roberts said the accident involved an 18-wheeler gravel truck and an SUV, which crashed head-on. Roberts said the SUV driver was transported to the emergency room with critical injuries.

"There are a lot of rumors going around," he added, noting that the driver was not airlifted to the hospital, but instead transported by ambulance.

Union County Judge Mike Loftin said a county garbage truck was nearby at the time of the accident, but was not involved. Loftin went to the scene as well, and said he did not believe the gravel truck driver was injured.

Additional details about the crash were not available at press time.
