Second Stage Acting Troupe to perform 'Sylvia'

The Second Stage Acting Troupe is gearing up to perform the play "Sylvia" by A.R. Gurney at the South Arkansas Arts Center.

The troupe, which has previously staged plays including "Laundry and Bourbon" and "Lone Star," focuses on more mature and alternative experiences for theater-goers.

Rhett Davis, a coordinator with Second Stage and director of this performance, described the play as a domestic comedy/drama that, according to a plot outline, involves a talking dog.

"'Sylvia' is a story about new beginnings and how impactful one new addition can [affect] everything as a whole. Sylvia is a new dog that is introduced to the relationship of Greg and Kate that causes tension between them," Davis said.

Theater in the round is a term that refers to a space in which the audience surrounds the stage.

The troupe has been busily rehearsing all month, preparing for the March 30 - April 1 run of the show.

"Rehearsals have been going on for several weeks - since early March - and have been going well. The show is done in the round which makes for a more intimate experience," Davis said.

"Sylvia" will mark the third performance by the Second Stage troupe.

"It's really coming together as we establish our place in the community. Each show presents its own challenges and exciting experiences," Davis said.

"So far, the audience reception has been great. People have really welcomed having an alternative in the theatrical aspect in our community. It's been phenomenal seeing actors get to spread their wings a bit in this type of environment," he continued.

The cast features Kaila Emery as Sylvia, Chris Curry as Greg, Elva Melillo as Kate, and Hannah Hopson as Tom/Phyllis/Leslie. Davis is the director and Kennedy Langston is the assistant director for the play.

Davis said the show is most appropriate for those 21 and above.

"There are jokes in the play that'll hit for all age ranges, as the show is quite witty," he explained.

Second Stage is also partnering with the Union County Animal Protection Society during this performance.

A puppy meet-and-greet will be held before the show at 6:30 p.m., and attendees can bring pet food or supplies to donate at the door for a coupon, Davis said.

Tickets are $10 for SAAC members or $15 for the general public and can be purchased at the South Arkansas Arts Center.

The show will start each night at 7 p.m.
